Why the CANS Certification Matters in Aesthetic Medicine

The field of aesthetics is constantly evolving, and with that evolution comes a growing need for higher standards and qualifications. While there are currently no strict industry-wide requirements for injectors, we hope to see changes in the coming years that will establish clear certification standards. A credential that sets injectors apart is the Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist (CANS) certification—a distinction that demonstrates expertise, dedication, and a commitment to patient safety.

What is the CANS Certification?

The Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist (CANS) certification is a nationally recognized credential for nurses who specialize in aesthetic medicine. Offered through the Plastic Surgical Nursing Certification Board (PSNCB), this certification is designed for registered nurses (RNs), nurse practitioners (NPs), and physician assistants (PAs) who have significant experience in aesthetics.

To earn the CANS certification, candidates must:

  • Hold an active and unrestricted nursing license

  • Have at least two years of experience in a core specialty (plastic surgery, dermatology, or ophthalmology)

  • Accumulate a minimum of 1,000 hours of practice in aesthetic medicine

  • Pass a rigorous examination covering key areas such as neurotoxins, dermal fillers, laser treatments, and patient safety protocols

Achieving this certification is a testament to an injector’s expertise, ongoing education, and commitment to excellence in aesthetic medicine.

What is ISPAN?

The International Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Nurses (ISPAN) is a professional organization dedicated to supporting and advancing the field of aesthetic and reconstructive nursing. ISPAN provides education, certification opportunities, and networking resources for nurses in the aesthetic industry. The organization plays a crucial role in setting high standards and promoting safe practices within the field.

The CANS certification is directly associated with ISPAN, as it falls under their jurisdiction and is administered through the PSNCB. Being a member of ISPAN gives injectors access to the latest industry research, ongoing training, and a community of professionals who prioritize excellence in patient care.

Why We Believe in the CANS Certification

At Noir Medical Aesthetics, we believe that every injector should strive for the highest level of education and professionalism. Our founder, Neeki Ostad, FNP, is not only an experienced injector but also an educator in the aesthetics industry. She continuously seeks opportunities to expand her knowledge and refine her techniques, setting a standard of excellence for both our practice and the industry as a whole.

Choosing an injector with a CANS certification means choosing someone who has gone above and beyond to master their craft. It signifies a commitment to patient safety, precision, and staying current with the latest advancements in aesthetic medicine.

What to Ask Your Injector

Whether you're new to aesthetic treatments or a seasoned patient, it’s essential to do your due diligence when selecting an injector. Here are a few key questions to ask:

  • Where did you receive your training?

  • How long have you been injecting?

  • What products do you use, and why did you choose to carry those brands?

  • Can you provide the lot numbers of the products being used?

Asking for lot numbers allows you to verify the authenticity of the products used in your treatment. This extra step ensures that you’re receiving safe and genuine injectables, giving you peace of mind in your aesthetic journey.

The CANS certification is more than just a title—it’s a mark of excellence in aesthetic medicine. As the industry grows, we hope to see more providers embracing higher standards to ensure the best outcomes for patients. At Noir Medical Aesthetics, we prioritize education, expertise, and transparency, so you can feel confident in the care you receive.

If you have any questions about aesthetic treatments or want to learn more about the qualifications of our injectors, we’re always here to help!
